The 4-way Stop Sign Problem

The 4-way stop sign is something drivers have come across more than a few times. These Stops can become irritating for some drivers as they can become time consuming.

The Problem With 4-way Signs

The main problem with the 4-way stop is the annoyance of them. In certain scenario's Driver's arrive at the stop at the same time and it can cause some confusion and awkwardness. Not only that but they can also become very repetitive.

The impact of 4-Way Stops

Every Driver has come across a 4-way stop maybe once or multiple times.“There are about one million four-way intersections with stop signs in the U.S., each one being traversed by more than 760,000 vehicles per year. That amounts to more than 760 billion (760,000 x one million) stops and starts in a year, one-fourth of which (190 billion), (Kessler,1).

A Solution to the 4-way Stop.

My Solution to the 4-way Stop involves a new system including a streetlight and a new form of technology used in the road. This new system will Involve a sensor on the top of the road. This sensor will be placed around all 4 sides before each stop. This sensor will be connected to a streetlight. Whenever a car passes over the sensor the sensor will cause the streetlight to go green depending on if it is the only car in the vicinity of the sensors. This will speed up wait times and hopefully get rid of the confusion at the stops.
